Our delivery man this morning was grinning from ear to ear. No I didn't wear my shirt on backwards.
He: So Jesusa, who are you rooting for (with a thick Spanish accent)?
Me: What do you mean?
He: You know, soccer. World Cup is starting and Mexico is playing on Friday!
Me: "Oh," with a shamed look on my face. Well, I don't have a team.
He: Just choose Mexico and wake up early on Friday to watch the game.
Me: Ok
When he left my lab I felt so disturbed, I immediately run to my computer and googled "World Cup." I was thinking to myself, "Gee, I was just warming up for the Lakers!" Not that I don't like soccer, I guess I just wasn't expose to it much with basketball, baseball, tennis and football as the main sports in my little world of sports. I know, being "sports challenged" is not a valid excuse.
GoooooooaaaaaaaLLLLLLLL....
My gulay, I feel for your delivery man, hahaha. I too am a World Cup fan and in this basketball-crazy country, I have no one to talk to about it. Sad.
ReplyDelete@buday - Apparently it seems like I'm the minority, mwaaaa. I just heard a whole segment on NPR about it on my way home to work this afternoon. And, one of the post docs in the next door lab was raving about it (he's British). Well, I just have to watch it for myself I guess and see whether I'll be into it:) By the way, do you have a team?
ReplyDeleteI got into it because of Maradona in 1986 so there's always Argentina, especially with Messi. Brazil also because of Kaka. And it would be interesting to see what Cristiano Ronaldo can do for Portugal. But I basically root for any team good enough to get to the WC, especially the underdogs. ;) It's really all about the thrill of every hard-earned "goooooal!".
